Recipe ingredients:

  • 500 ml (2 cups / 17 oz) of milk
  • 1 cup (200g / 7 oz) of sugar

Instructions:

In a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan, add the milk and sugar. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon or silicone spatula, until it starts to boil — this usually takes 10 to 15 minutes.

Once it starts boiling, reduce the heat to low and keep stirring non-stop. Gradually, the mixture will begin to thicken, turn golden, and become creamy.

The perfect consistency is when you can scrape the bottom of the pan and see it clearly for a few seconds before the mixture flows back over it. This takes about 40 to 45 minutes.

Once it reaches the desired texture, pour it into a clean dish or container and let it cool completely before serving.

Extra Tips:

  • This creamy dulce de leche is perfect for spreading on toast, filling cakes, or simply eating by the spoonful.
  • The right saucepan matters! Use a wide, heavy-bottomed pan to help the mixture cook evenly and prevent burning.
  • Keep stirring. Do not stop, especially toward the end, as the mixture thickens quickly and can burn easily.
  • Want it firmer? Simply cook it a few minutes longer for a thicker texture, perfect for cutting into pieces like fudge.
